More than 11,500 new ports to support vehicle-to-grid power integration across 27 states

The United States is stepping on the accelerator of the electric future. A fresh $635 million federal investment aims to supercharge both the nation’s charging network and its aging power grid, marking a bold stride toward cleaner transportation.
The funding, announced by the Department of Transportation, will add more than 11,500 electric vehicle charging ports across 27 states, four tribal nations, and Washington, D.C. But this surge isn’t just about plugging in more cars. It’s about turning EVs into active players in the energy ecosystem.
At the heart of the plan is vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, technology. It allows EVs not only to draw power but also to feed it back during peak demand. Think of millions of parked cars doubling as flexible batteries, storing energy when it’s cheap and returning it when the grid is stressed. That could ease power shortages, cut emissions, and even earn money for drivers.
“This investment is about modernizing the energy ecosystem through transportation,” said Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt. “We’re laying the foundation for a flexible, future-ready grid.”
Companies like ChargePoint and ABB are already at the forefront of this shift. Both are expanding their bidirectional charging systems, once considered futuristic, now seen as vital to grid resilience. Their efforts highlight how public funding can accelerate private innovation.
Still, for V2G to truly take off, utilities must get on board. Many power companies have yet to build programs that reward drivers for sending energy back to the grid. Without those incentives, the vision of a dynamic, two-way power network could stall.
Even so, momentum is unmistakable. Federal dollars are flowing, states are adopting aggressive clean-energy targets, and more drivers are going electric every day. Together, these forces are transforming the grid from a one-way delivery system into a living network that moves energy in all directions.
This is not just a rollout of charging stations. It is the early architecture of an energy revolution, one where the car in your driveway might help keep the lights on across town.
