Nuvve scales V2G tech in New Mexico and Japan, turning EV fleets into grid-saving energy hubs
20 Mar 2025

Electric vehicles are not just hitting the road; they are powering it. U.S.-based Nuvve is turning EV fleets into miniature power plants, using vehicle-to-grid technology that lets them store and send electricity back when demand spikes. The concept, once experimental, is now reshaping how clean energy flows across communities.
In New Mexico, Nuvve just landed a contract worth nearly $400 million to electrify the state’s school bus fleet. These buses spend most of their day parked, making them ideal energy reserves that can feed power to the grid during high-demand hours. The payoff is twofold: fewer emissions and a stronger, more flexible energy system.
Across the Pacific, Nuvve is scaling up through NUVVE Japan, a new franchise model that gives local partners autonomy while relying on the U.S. team for core software and infrastructure. The approach is already catching attention across Asia, where energy grids are under increasing strain.
“We’re not just electrifying vehicles, we’re electrifying infrastructure,” said CEO Gregory Poilasne. “Our local partnerships help us expand faster without sacrificing reliability.”
Government agencies are taking notice. The U.S. Department of Energy has named V2G a key tool for modernizing the grid, and Nuvve’s real-world deployments are proving the promise.
Still, growth comes with challenges such as uneven regulations, policy gaps, and the complexity of operating across borders. Yet few doubt the potential payoff.
For now, Nuvve’s model hints at a new kind of mobility: one where EVs are not just consumers of energy but contributors to it. If the company’s vision holds, the humble school bus could help power the next energy revolution.
