ChargePoint’s new fast charger boosts security, cuts charging time, and powers homes or grids with bidirectional tech
18 Apr 2025

ChargePoint’s latest EV charger isn’t just an upgrade; it’s a rethink of how drivers and the grid share power. The company’s new Level 2 model blends faster charging, smarter software, and tougher hardware in one sleek package.
Designed to cut charging time to about four hours, the unit’s standout feature is bidirectional charging. That means energy can now flow both ways, turning an idle EV into a temporary power source for a home or even a small contributor to the wider grid. It’s a leap toward a more flexible and resilient energy ecosystem.
“We’re not just building chargers, we’re building energy solutions,” a ChargePoint spokesperson said. The comment reflects a shift across the EV industry, as charging stations evolve from simple plugs into intelligent networked systems.
Security also takes a front seat. With copper theft surging at public stations, ChargePoint reinforced its new cables with steel cores and added live tamper alerts through its updated monitoring platform. The goal: make charging safer both physically and digitally.
The company says prices will start below $1,000, keeping the product within reach for homeowners and fleet operators alike. A European launch is planned for summer, followed by a U.S. release later in the year.
The rollout comes at a critical time. After financial headwinds and a stock price slip, ChargePoint is betting on innovation to spark a comeback. Rising subscription revenues hint that the gamble could pay off.
In a world where EVs are becoming mobile batteries on wheels, ChargePoint’s new charger offers more than speed. It offers control, resilience, and a glimpse at the grid of the future.
