Xos launches mass production of V2G-enabled school buses, turning idle fleets into revenue-generating batteries for the American power grid
16 Apr 2026

Xos, the California based manufacturer of electric commercial vehicles, has started production on a school bus platform capable of returning power to the electrical grid. The move, announced on March 9, 2026, targets tens of thousands of school routes across the United States. It marks a shift for the company from niche pilots to the commercial production of vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, technology.
The system allows buses to discharge stored energy during periods of high demand. Because school buses remain idle for most of the day, they are well suited to support the grid when electricity prices are at their highest. By using factory equipped bidirectional hardware, school districts can earn revenue without the need for expensive equipment upgrades.
The financial logic for fleet operators relies on the gap between charging costs and grid payments. Previous trials in the US suggest that a single bus can generate thousands of dollars in annual revenue by participating in utility programs. Xos has integrated the technology at the depot level to manage energy flow across several vehicles at once.
Saleh Heydari, the Chief Technology Officer at Xos, described the system as being operationally seamless and financially meaningful from day one. The company plans to expand these capabilities to its wider product line, including delivery vans and energy storage systems.
The rollout comes as state regulators in California, Maryland, and Colorado adjust utility rules to encourage V2G participation. These policy shifts aim to use parked electric fleets as a decentralized power source to stabilize regional grids. While the technology is now entering the factory line, its long term success will depend on how quickly utility companies can simplify the process for connecting these mobile batteries to the national infrastructure.
